Community Leader Forum - Jacksonville - UNF President John Delaney (10/1/09)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (October 1, 2009) -- UNF President John Delaney explained why he believes new educational ventures hold the potential key to strengthening Florida's economy to a crowded room at the River Club. The former mayor of Jacksonville was the latest speaker in GrayRobinson's Community Leader Forum series that brings high profile leaders and together with community leaders to discuss relevant topics.

Delaney suggested that Florida's historically top economic drivers--agriculture, tourism and growth--are not self-sustaining and points to education as a resource that could help support the state's future economic health.

"I think the new economy for the United States and Florida in particular is going to be linked to that knowledge economy," said Delaney. "It's going to be what comes out of the universities in the state. It's going to be those inventions and research activity. It's going to be the production of degrees."

UNF believes it can cater to businesses prevalent in northeast Florida to enhance the job market and industrial output of the state. Delaney asserted flagship programs in logistics and transportation, nursing, coastal biology, and international business will help propel the state on the national level and help stablize the economy.
